Strut Cartridge Bottom Spacer Question With Bilsteins 760 700

Hello,

I'm in the midst of replacing the strut cartridges on my 1988 760 wagon. As I have read elsewhere in other posts, the Bilstein Touring Class struts are a little taller than the stock Volvo struts. When the are inserted in the strut tube with the spacer installed, they sit about 1/4" taller than the strut tube. When the spacer is removed, they are exactly flush with the top of the tube (they sit right on the snap ring at the bottom of the tube). Here are my questions: Can I install the strut cartridges without the spacer allowing the strut to seat against the bottom spacer? Is the spacer necessary for safe installation and proper operation? It seems to me that Bilstein may have engineered the cartridges to be used without the spacer since the height is just right. Any (quick) advice would be greatly appreciated as I am in desperate need of my vehicle.

Thanks!

Pat
