Odd elec. behavior - tach, dash lights 200 1984

Cool mornings (50F), my tach won't register and small clock stops. But if I turn the dash-lights rheostat all the way off, both come alive. Turning the rheostat back on, both quit again. Later, after car warms up, can turn up rheostat without losing tach/clock. On warmer mornings, no odd behavior.

Any ideas?
