No power in a 240 200

I have a 1989 240 DL. It is sitting in the driveway after being towed home. It lost all power and could not make it beyond idle speed. This has been a degenerative problem -- getting progressivley worse over time. It is almost like it is majorly missing. At times it would correct itself after turning the car off and then on again. Now the condition has totally set in. It seems as though a component has progressively gone bad. Any thoughts?
befuddled
