Cannot adjust the carbs!...vacuum leak??? ...or me??? 140-160

Hi, sometimes I feel like I don't know anything.
I decided to give the 142 a tune up this weekend, so I adjusted the valeves, put in a pertronix ignition, new plugs, cap, rotor, wires, did the timing on Saturday. I then went on a trip to visit Mom, about three hours, (round trip) of driving and the car ran well with just a little flat spot when accelerating, so Sunday was going to be tune the carbs in the morning. I had planned to do it anyway. Oh, on the way home from Moms I put a can of fuel system cleaner in the tank, figured it couldn't hurt.
...Anyway, I went to tune the carbs today and could not get them even close. I have done this many times, but today nothing was going my way. what is happening is I can't get a smooth idle and the rpms jsut start to run way up by themselves up to about 3,000rpms even sometimes with the idle screws backed out. If I lean out the mixture it sputters and coughs if I richen it it just races.
Did the carb cleaner maybe clean out a block of crud that was sealing a leak in a carb or manifold gaskit?
Did I just totally forget how to adjust SU's? ...I always follow the manual for the initial set up, honest.

This is what I get for saying that SU's were easy to set up a few months ago!
