240 Auto -w- O/D: O/D light works on/off, but O/D does NOT go into gear... 200 1991

RE: 1991 VOLVO 240 4CYL AUTO 187K MILES

A couple weeks ago my overdrive decided to stop engaging.
The O/D light on the dash will go on and off, but there
is no change in the drive gear being selected. I think
it's odd that a signal would be getting to the light
indicator, but that it wasn't causing a change in the
condition of the transmission itself. Anyone have any
good advice on the troubleshooting path to take?
Relay?
Solenoid?
