service light on for first few minutes after my car is started?

the service light ALWAYS comes on for a few minutes when i start my car. it could run for five hours or 30 seconds and if i turn it off and right back on (or wait a while) the service light comes right back on. i've tried reseting it with that little push button in the dash, but it keeps doing this. any ideas? i figure something has failed.
