Engine noise has me stumped! 700 1988

Well, I am glad but feel a little stupid. I found the noise. After taking everything apart and as I had the valve cover off, making a mess, and listening thru a pipe, I hit the hose that goes from the intake to the flame trap. Bingo. It was sucking so hard that it was making the noise. When I pinch off the hose the noise stopped. My question now is it suppose to pull that hard. Flame trap is clean. When I hold my finger over the end of the hose it will hold my finger.
Love these Volvos. Now I can get my 850 back from my daughter and my better half will stop asking "Hows it coming"? translated: when do I get my car back.
Thanks for the replies,
Ray
Also if you look at my profile, I have lots of parts and need thin out the back yard if you need any drop me an e-mail.
