tempurature gauge swap 120-130

O.K. Got the gas tank boiled out and patched for the time being and it will be installed in a day or two so I can finally DRIVE and break in the "freshened" B20B/F and make certain all my various repairs really were repairs.

Unfortunately, some PO brainiac decided the best way to get the head off the engine was to cut that pesky temp sender "wire."

D'oh!

So now I'm lookin at either finding a new (hah) or decent used (snigger) gauge or gutting my dash for an electrical replacement behind the stock "face."

Right, finding the stock replacement may be a chore but I know how to go about it.
What I need, please, is a chorus of voices on the topic of installing an electrical gauge in the stock gauge hole. That way I can weigh the relative merits in my mind and finally decide which way I'm gonna go.

I thought I saw a thread discussing the very topic some several months ago but the search did not turn it up... Not to mention that it is a major chore sifting through the 700/900/200 stuff that comes up (the number of 200-series temp complaints makes me a bit leery of those gauges!).

So, I'm specifically hoping for advice on:
1) has anyone done this (or have I lost my mind)?
2) assuming I haven't lost my mind, were you happy with the result?
3) Further down the trail, what did you use for the gauge source (i.e. after market unit, 140-series unit, what)?
4) Any nasty tricks/pitfalls in the process?

What I already know:
I have an "F" head so it has the sender already in place (to plug the hole right now!)
I can always install and aftermarket unit, I would rather not.
I have the savvy to gut the OE unit and put in new guts, just want to avoid the test phase.

thanks guys (and gals),
