Hi,
My car is a 1989 760GLE with the PRV B280F/AW71 ~249,500kms.
I recently (4500kms ago) changed the oil with Mobil 1 ~5w50. I then changed the filter again 800kms (a day road trip) after, when the noise became apparent. The oil is clear and filled to the correct level.
Tappets were adjusted 5000kms before said oil change. The noise is mainly a light ticking (much louder than injectors), but becomes more of a light clacking sound around ~1.5k rpm. The sound is very noticable at all rpms. I listened thru the valve covers with a large screwdriver and I can hear the sound on both banks of cylinders.
The exhaust manifold gaskets were replace about 3 months ago and check out fine now.
Could it be the grade of oil I'm using? ...I don't know what else it could be. Should I pull the valve covers and check the tappets/camshafts/lifters etc?
The engine wasn't making this noise when I was using Valvoline Durablend 15w50 previously. I should also point out that the noise is most obvious when the car reaches full operating temperature.
To begin with I thought the sound might be pinging, but I always use premium fuel and I changed the plugs to be sure (they checked out fine anyway, though).
I hooked up the test LED and it showed no problems (one of the knock senseors has suspect wiring, I thought it could be that).
Thanks :)
