Well, I did it. All Intake Valve Stem Seals were replaced, as well as Cushions for Exhaust and Intake Valves. I used 14 feet of cotoon rope, 3/8" diameter, roughly. A little drama on #3, the damn rope got stuck in the Cylinder. I finally freed it after some fiddling. I started with removing the Grille, the Rectangular Head Light Protectors, Fan with Clutch, Fan Shroud, Water Pump and Alternator Belts, Timing Belt Cover, Tensioner, Timing Belt, Camshaft Bearing Caps, leaving the #3 Center one until last, working from outer to inner. I cleaned up everything, as much as possible. No grease or anything, so I used Motor Honey to lube the various cleaned parts, before re-installing and re-assembly. I started about 9:00 and got #4 done, by 6:00. I will finish up, tomorrow, putting the Camshaft back in and puttin the front of the car back together. It started raining, in the afternoon, as luck would have it. My tool is modified from others on the internet. The JB Weld or something similar in Australia was cured for 3 days. It failed after the first Cylinder. That caused a delay. I had to do a little tailoring of the tool, for Cylinder #2, #3, and #4. I photographed everything. Trust me, my tool was well thought out and the one that appears on: http://valvespringcompressor.weblogs.us/ doesn't even come close to mine, by comparison. Whatever is used must have all rough and sharp edges removed, so it does not damage the head or bearing surfaces. I leveled and polished the face that mated with the Spring Cap/Valve Stem Guide. I lubed it before puting metal to metal. I hope the rest goes as well, tomorrow.
How important is it to use a small Torque Wrench to set 15lbs-ft. for the Camshaft Bearing Cap Nuts? It seems like a very small value, about hand tight.
I have a new Camshaft Seal, but could not get the Bolt off when it was still mounted to the Head. Any ideas?
Lastly, the Valve Stem Seals, Cushions, and Half Moon Seal all came from Volvo as a Set. I was surprised that there are no Valve Stem Seals for the Exhaust Valves. Some cars have them. I did not bother to check the Exhaust Valves, other than install a new Cushion. Any idea why there are only Inlet Valve Stem Seals? I have asked and was told they only use them on the Intake Valves.
Thanks.
When I get the photos done, I will put them on CD and figure out how to post them, and make a more detailed write-up.
