Intermittent Overdrive 900 1993

Our 940 with automatic transmission has recently developed an intermittent overdrive problem. By playing around with the switch on the transmission gear selector the problem can usually be made to go away so we can drive the car. I have read the FAQ on relays/switches/wiring and solenoids and have the following question. Does the fact that the up-arrow light goes on help me isolate the problem cause? I can understand if the switch fails, it's very likely to turn on the up-arrow light. If the relay were to fail, I can understand how the up-arrow lamp may turn on. If there is a wiring problem or the solenoid fails then unless the up-arrow circuit actually senses current it seems unlikely the lamp would illuminate. Is this correct? Does anyone know under what conditions the up-arrow light will illuminate? By the way, we had a similar episode about a year ago. At that time I re-soldered the contacts on the overdrive relay circuit board and everything has been fine since.
