Temporary synthetic oil leaks normal? 700 1987

I switched my 760 turbo over to synthetic when I bought it last year, wanting to prolong the life of the turbo and related components, and hoping it might give me somewhat better mileage. To my horror, it started to leak like a sieve -- seemed like the oil was making its way past every single gasket and seal. I was planning out a major maintenance weekend replacing everything I could think of, when after about a month, the leakage tapered off and stopped. I had the engine steam cleaned, and it's stayed remarkably clean since.

The car has 157K on it and uses about a quart of Mobil One between changes, which I do at 5K miles. It seems like the leaks are gone except for the oil return line from the turbo, which I plan to address tomorrow.

Has anybody else experience this sort of weird thing? Is it possible the gaskets and seals expanded or something when they came into contact with the different oil? How can that be? I mean, they're made of two or three completely different materials, aren't they? On the other hand, could the synthetic oil have loosened up sufficient crud in the engine that the leaks are, in a sense, clogged? Should I go ahead and replace all the seals and gaskets anyway?
