Strange brakes, squeel and shudder sometimes 200 1988

Usually the brakes are OK. The pedal feels soft and gradually sink when you hold your foot on it (especially if you play with the spongey bit of the travel), so maybe the MC is on it's way out. But overall the brakes are sharp. At city speed (below 30MPH) almost too sharp, but at highway speed it often feels like it's not sharp enough. Not sure if that's related to my problem...

The problem is that every now and again I get this squeel from the brakes like metal on metal, but also a shudder throughout the car. Goes away immediately if you take your foot off the brake and apply it again. Happens at slower speeds, but also sometimes the brakes feel insufficient at higher speeds. I think it might be related. Took the wheels off (the 3 that I could get off!), and the pads look fine and all the retaining pins are there. From memory it is ATE, the ones where the pins have little bulges on them. Any ideas?

I've got a MC off a '95 940GL, non-ABS. Does anyone know if it would be OK to fit it to the 240 to see if this problem goes away? Thanks.
