I have been going through the old posts on BB and have some questions regarding the cooling system (car: 1994 944 NA):
1. It seems like black radiator caps are recommended in place of green cap. My coolant collector bottle has a green cap on top it, which seems to be factory installed. Should I change it with a black cap?
2. My radiator was replaced by dealer when I bought the car from him last year. Unfortunately I do not know if it's a volvo OEM or aftermarket. I read from the old posts that different radiators like different types of coolant. Using wrong type of coolant can even cause the welding points leaking. If I do not know the brand of the radiator, what coolant can be used without worrying?
3. I am about to replace the three rediator hoses, but kinda scared by the heater hoses. Is there a way to tell an aged heater hose? Both radiator hoses bulged around the clamp and look old, while the heater hoses look fairly flat and new. Can I assume they were not the original (do they bulge around the clamps after ten years usage?)
4. My radiator has no drain plug. From what I read last night, I need to detach the lower radiator hose and engine drain plug to drain all coolant; and when I refill, I need to fill from the white plastic coolant collecting bottle. Are they the correct steps? One thing I do not understand is, someone mentioned loosening the thermostat housing to bleed air out. Can someone elaborate how to do it? I do not want to replace the thermostat as it seems to work pretty well.
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
