Great airflow - maybe, but I'm skeptical about that.

As long as you keep them wet with filter oil, they'll do ok. If the foam is allowed to become dry, bits get sucked into the carb and then the engine (this is not ideal). Once the filter medium is fully dried out and becomes crumbly (just a few weeks if they're not oiled), airflow drops substantially, up to the point of being so restrictive that the engine will barely run. Cleaning bits of foam that's become soaked with gasoline out of a carb is really not fun - turns into a weird gooey gel type stuff.
