Speedo / turn signal problems 200 1986

Hi - I was wondering if anyone could help me with some problems I'm having with a Volvo 240 DL wagon. The speedometer started cutting out on me a couple weeks ago, but sometimes would come back to life while driving. Also, when the speedo doesn't work, the odometer doesn't work either. I took out the instrument cluster and checked the little gear that supposedly breaks, but that seemed allright. The connections to the rear axle seem OK, but I couldn't get it open to check the electronic assembly back there.

Since I took the cluster out and put it back in, a new problem is that the right turn signal also turns on the high beams, and you have to flick the bar up and down a few times to get them to turn off, so the turn signal and high beams flash. I'm just waiting for someone to reach an UZI out their window and open fire on me for flashing them.

I was wondering if it is possibly a grounding problem. There is one dangling wire which was not connected to the instrument cluster, but it's bundled with all the others, so it seems like it should be. It's red and white with a plastic clip on the end, very similar to a red and yellow wire which did connect to the cluster. On the passenger side, when you remove the piece of material below the glove box, there is a thicker white wire which is just dangling, and I can't find where either wire might connect to.

Any help that anyone could offer is greatly appreciated!
