my volvo make a ticking sound 200 1984

I have had my 84 gl for about a year. since i have owned it i have added a head set of gaskets, and performed various tune up procedures like valve lash adj. My volvo has always made a ticking sound. It doesent sound like a valve even though the sound blends in to the valve clatter. I am thinking of driving across country and feel i need to find some peace over this ticking, wheter its nothing or i require a rebuild, i must know. Anyone who could shed some light on my situation,I would be gratefull. The sound is like someone is in my engine with a tiny jackhammer hammering on metal somewhere under my hood.?.?:)
