Bleeding the Brakes & IPD Garagesale 200

Last weekend when a friend helped me replace the front brakes, we ran the engine to get pressure while bleeding the brakes.

Now I'm wondering if that is the correct way to do it? I don't recall anything in Bentley about running the engine.

Also, is anyone else going to IPD's garage sale in Portland on Saturday. My son & I are coming down from Seattle. I hope to find some good stuff, or maybe just meet a few other Volvo fans.
