Water pump rubber gaskets/o-rings 700

First, thanks for everyone's help. I am fairly new to working on my 740 and this board has been very helpful.

I changed the water pump -- worked out great. However, there is a lot of discussion about whether or not to use RTV on the gaskets... I was told by a friend not use any sealant even on the rubber o-rings. When I got everything together, of course, the heater pipe o-ring was leaking and needed a sealant.

I just wanted to post this experience to let other novices share my mistakes and learning experiences. Indeed, the PAPER GASKET doesn't need any sealant (most people seem to agree on this).

There seem to be various opinions on this in books, but when should one use sealant and when should one not? In general...

Thanks

Ed P
