Alternator Recommendations? 120-130

First you have to determine if your engine has an alternator "ear" - part of the engine block casting that sticks out and which the alternator bottom bolt is attached. If it has the ear it will be equipped with a small alternator. If you have an ear, then you don't need to buy a special bracket. You can just buy a new 55 amp Bosch alternator.
If you don't have an ear, you will have a generator bracket that is bolted on to the block with three bolts. In this case you must buy a special bracket. The SWEM bracket adapts to a Delco alternator, the IPD bracket adapts to a Bosch alternator. On one of my Volvos (PV544), I bought the SWEM alternator and have had no problems whatsoever, been going strong for 3 years. Also, if you have any problems in installation, Ron Kwas at SWEM is very helpful.
On my other Volvo (122S), I have the ear, so I just bought a Bosch Alternator (AL77X) and it bolted right in. Most B20's have the ear, but B18's don't. But there are a few B18's that have the ear, my 1965 122S is one of those rare exceptions.
