There are two nylon groummets, one at each end of the shifter rod between the shifter control and transmission. When these fail and fall out you end up with a lot of slop, sometimes so much you cannot shift the transmission. I picked up these groummets from the dealer for less than a dollar I think. They are installed from under the car. Fairly straight forward installation. Hope this helps.
