How big a deal to replace differential or ring/pinion gears? 140-160 1974

How big a deal ($$) is it to replace a howling differential? Now that the new quiet engine is in, other noises are annoying.

I'm going to replace the rest of the bushings first, torque and panhard rod, to make sure those aren't transmitting the noise into the cabin, but I expect with nearly 300k the ring gears or diff can use replacing.

I was thinking about and LSD, but probably only if there was a complete axle to swap in. The aftermarket ones seem too performance oriented, I just want grip on the algae when I pull my sailboat trailer out. I don't want to deal with cornering and tire wear issues, or a locker switch, or the expense.

I was going to replace the rear bearings, but it seems they get destroyed when the axle is pulled (? 1974), and they don't resonate, so I suspect they are okay. That will wait until I find out I need a ring gear.
