’93 945 ... fuel gauge ~ flick it to make needle go up

Hello. I have a ’93 945. I have always had this problem. I have to give my fuel gauge a good flick several times and the needle comes up to the appropriate level. Once it’s up … it seems to be OK until I turn the car off for a while. Start it up again and I have to repeat the same process described above.

This weekend, I decided to address the problem. I’m an Electrical Technologist and Engineer and have done a lot of soldering work. I removed the “Instrument Panel” and carefully removed the small PCB (circuit board) where the fuel gauge sits on and resoldered all the pads where the individual components like resistors and cap’s are populated. I cleaned any excess flux on the back of the board using some flux remover without disturbing any of the components. I put everything back together and installed the “Instrument Panel” back in the dash. I started the car ….. and No change. I had to flick the gauge to make the needle go up ... as usual.

I’m wondering if any other pads needed to be soldered on the back of the “Instrument Panel” itself …..ie … on the flex (ribbon cable like) circuit board which is the entire back of the “Instrument Panel” ?
