M47 Transmission problem 200

The M47 on my son's '88 240 just started making a loud clunking sound in reverse only. Prior to this he had heard a whining sound from there. We checked the driveline, mounts, and exhaust and all are ok.

When we put the car up on ramps and jackstands, and ran the car in reverse, we could locate the sound coming from the lower driver's side of the tranny. Our conclusion is that there is a bad gear or bearing on the shaft for the reverse gear.

Questions:
1. Does the board agree with our diagnosis?

2. The FAQs and archives seem to agree that replacement with aused tranny is the way to go. Do you agree? Any suggestions for a good source? Probable price? We will be checking the salvage yards here.
