These problems come up often.
Temp gauge problem most likely due to bad temp. compensator board.
Best cure is to do a temp compensator bypass.
Do a search here.
I've posted several times w/details - you can search on my name "brucepick".
Its also possible that there are problems with the guage itself or the sender, but it seems that 95 out of 100 times it's the compensator board.
Fuel gauge problem is likely caused by bad sender in tank.
Fixing is a pain but doable by you or a shop that knows Volvos.
If anyone tells you to fix by hitting on top of the dashboard with your hand, over the gauge, tell them to take a hike and don't come back.
Again, it's possible the problem is elsewhere, but I'll bet 5 cents that if you take the cover plate off the sender area you'll see electrical and fuel hose connections both rusted away so badly you'll wonder how the car ever goes anywhere. The fuel level sender includes all those terminals for fuel and electrical, so you replace the sender & so get a whole fresh set of clean connections.
Overdrive problems - again, covered here frequently in detail.
Auto tranny or stick??
Do some searches.
If intermittent, a very likely cause is a bad wire leading out of the shifter box down into the tranny tunnel. Then goes forward and finally to the OD solenoid on tranny.
When it gets old it loses insulation, so can short out, can also tear partially and work intermittently.
OR can be caused by a bad O/D relay, located to the left of the glove box.
Bad wire is cheap to fix but a real pain. Needs patience.
Don't fool yourself - if the wire is bad you'll have to fix it or bypass it, no amount of new relays will help if the wire is torn/broken, as it often is.
Do some searches here, you'll find plenty.
