Ol' dependable finally choked..... 700 1985

Hello..The one Volvo(230F, M46 4OD) I've owned that has never stranded me once (unlike the beloved others)...finally kacked out. The clutch cable broke, pedal hit the floor, I spent a few minutes dodging traffic and picking up the shims (!), but luckily it popped right as I was pulling up to the work parking lot.

At first I assumed it was just time for the cable to go, so a new one is here at the parts shop. After closer inspection of the clutch fork..it looks like it may be worse than I first thought. The fork seems completely loose, it can rotate in a circlish type pattern, not just staight back and forth. My roomate has an M46 off the car, and I can see the design of the fork, with the release bearing and all. Mine is a little "looser"....:<
My question is, is it shot? Can the fork slip off the bearing or has the bearing exploded? It (the bearing) was always a little noisy when the pedal was depressed, worked fine for 3 years and 40,000 kms.

The old blue tow truck deserves a better fate than bieng stuck at work for a week...it got that name, as it has towed all the other Volvos, including the roomie's at least once. A true workhorse of a car!!

Thanks in advance, Josh.
