maybe our timing chains are slipping a tooth or two?
Fortunately, this is one item that we can rule out. Since it's an intermitent problem, that would assume that the timing chains could slip a tooth, and then slip back to their original position. Since the torque loading from the crankshaft to the camshaft is linear (the camshaft is always causing a drag in one direction due to the lifters & valves), that's pretty unlikely... ...Not to mention that the B280 engines have some of the best timing chains you could ask for.
Just curious, have you checked you're wear indicator on your chain tensioner? I would suspect you have negligable wear and that your chains will be good for another million miles or so. On my car, I've got 1/2 a notch showing (up to 4 notches permissable before chain replacement is required) and my chains have about 150,000 miles on them so far. The previous B27 and B28 engines are a completely different story and they would often snap chains around 100,000 to 120,000 miles.
