After buying a Volvo power antenna, sans a short segment of 240-specific wiring, off of eBay, I've finally gotten around to attempting to install it. However, I tried it today and it didn't work.
The wiring that I was missing was the bit between the three spade connector off of the antenna and the two spade T-connector in the trunk. I got the connector and wiring from a 740, but it's not a direct fit--the 740 uses a dual round connector, while the 240 has that T-connector. So, I cut off the dual round prongs and used a (tab?) splice to connect the wires to the black and green wires in the trunk. I connected the ground wire (not part of that splicing) to a ground screw.
I spliced the red and green antenna wire to the solid green wire in the trunk and the solid red wire to the solid black wire. I figure this decision is the most likely reason for why things are not working.
I think the green wire might be the live wire from the battery and the black wire activates with the car ignition. The green wire appears to split in the trunk, with one end being unused (without a power antenna) and the other going into the trunk lid, presumably for the trunk central locking actuator or trunk light. Because I would guess that those mechanical parts would require an always-live wire, I think that the green wire is always live.
I also would guess that the motor won't work if the wires are backwards. Thus, does it sound like things are wired up correctly, or do I have them backwards? I *think* I've got the live wire connected to the red and green antenna wire, and the black wire to the solid red one. Should I bother switching the wires, or would it be wiser to begin investigating if I've got other problems, like a bad motor?
If anyone happens to have a picture of the power antenna and wiring in their 240, I'd love to see it. I've yet to come across a junkyard 240 with the power antenna and wiring still in it.
