Check engine light came on and now won't idle 700 1991

Fellow bricksters
My '91, 745 w/ 144K miles surprized me tonight coming home from work. The check engine light came on as I was slowing to turn into my street. As I braked to a stop it stalled. I restarted and I could only keep it running at 1000 rpm by pressing the accelerator. It will not idle if I release the accelerator. I have noticed over the past two weeks that it was taking two tries to start it, when prior to this (the last 90K miles) it fired up on first crank. I am thinking idle air control problem. The fuel injection whirrs with key on and it will run and rev as long as I am pressing the accelerator.

Would a failing IAC light the check engine light? I will follow the IAC advice in the FAQs but would appreciate advice from the community.

Thanks
Greg
