Nivomat replacement question 700 1989

Hi,
I have a 1989 760GLE with IRS, on which I'm about to replace the Nivomats. Is it possible to remove the shocks through the holes in the trailing arms, or do those components have to be removed? The car has done 250,000km on what appear to be the original nivomats, would it be worthwhile replacing the springs as well?
