Auto tranny bench test? 700 1986

Can an auto tranny be effectively bench tested for operation, specifically a ZF22 from an '86 turbo diesel?

I have a spare tranny that was a pull, and it was a factory rebuilt unit with only 40,000 miles on it. I'm thinking of popping it back in with the engine instead of the old one with over 200k on it, but it has been sitting out of a car for a couple of years ( came out of a car of one of the previous owners)

Thanks------
