Interesting. You have a rubber seal in that groove... It makes sense.
It's missing (aparrently) from mine. I ran across a site that sells seals, I should figure out where that was and see if I'm missing anything else.

My lower tray is actually in rather good condition. There's a bit of rust on each end where's it's screwed to the body, otherwise the tray has a nice galvanic coat and is free of rust. It's also free of most of its paint too.

The drain grooves were blocked up, so I had some intersting texas floral samples hiding in there. but fortunately no rust in the tray itself.

If there's supposed to be a rubber seal in there, I guess I shouldn't block it up, but maybe I can still repair the gate without preventing the installation of a rubber seal later.
