245 manual rear end in a 244 automatic, driveablity question 200 1989

Hi all,
I am ready to purchase an 89 245 for parts. I am thinking of swapping the rear axle to my 89 244. The 245 is a manual and has 3.31 gears, my 244 is and auto with 3.73 gears. The 244 runs strong, almost as strong as all 3 745ti I have driven. The idea is to have better gas mileage with the taller gears but I do not want to sacrifice too much performance. Do any of you all have any experience with this? The other plus is the wagon has good trailing arm bushings I wouldn't have to change soon and the 244's are shot. Any comments or questions are appreciated.
