Fuel sending unit and Junkyard 200 1990

Hi all,
The gas gauge in my 91 245 doesn't work. The wires feeding into the tank at the top have one that is broken off. There is a picture in the gallery that looks exactly like mine does. I am headed to the pick-n-pull to get a replacement. Do I need the complete drop-in unit? Can I just pull the cap with the wires intact? Is this item year specific or will any 200 series work? Also, since I'll be in the gas tank, what else should I take care(i.e. filters, hoses, maintenance issues that are tank/fuel related)? It is a blue ext, blue int, 5speed with 225,000 miles. Thanks for all the info. Loving this board.
