1990 240DL (Automatic) Gear selector or transmission problems(hope not!) 200

Hi,

A couple days ago my 90 240DL(just hit 161k) automatic started acting up on me. When I attempt to go in reverse the shifter starts shaking and acting like it wants to go down to neutral. At first it would basically stick between R and N with both gear indicator lights half-way illuminated. We adjusted the linkage a bit last night which keeps it stuck in reverse all right but the loud shaking is a bit of a concern. A friend at work thinks it's just an issue with the gear selector while my father thinks it's the actual transission. I'm not the biggest gearhead but I'd think if it was the actual transmission whatever the problem is would manifest itself in more ways than a shaking gear selector. I don't have any problems shifting between any other gears or driving in D, 1, or 2.

Thanks

Brian
