Hi,
Been watching these boards for sometime now in order to educate myself a bit on Volvos and recently bought an 89 245 wagon. However the engine needed replacement so I ordered a used engine for a 89 240 DL and had a friend install it. Now my friend is a professional mechanice (ASE cert) but not Volvo specific though he's had a fair amount of experience with them. The engine was delivered directly to him and it wasn't until he got the new engine in that he realized it wasn't identical to the old engine and that is was for an auto-trans and not manual (the old was for a manual). But he was able to swap parts and buy a few new ones easily enough and got everything working. He also noticed that the valve clearance wasn't like that of the old engine and deterined that is was an interference engine (which leads me to believe that it is a B234 engine.) Now everything is installed but:
-the engine and transmission vibrate rather harshly while idling (shift stick swings back and forth a good bit)
-the engine has the pinging sound (which hopefully will subside with 91 octane and some break-in time).
-it starts harshly sometimes requiring a single repeat effort.
-it will stall if not given some after a cold start.
-the transmission clatters during acceleration.
-acceleration seems rather sluggish.
Overall things are noisy, vibrating, and just not smooth like I hear a B234 engine should be but the car does run seemingly good once I'm up to speed.
Is there a serial number or part number on the engine so that I can determine for certain the exact model?
I intend on checking my vacuum hose, flame trap, and engine/trans mounts but not sure what else to do to if those don't help and I've a gut feeling they won't either because these parts are in good shape or something different and/or more serious is going on.
If anyone has suggestions on how to fix these problems it would be much appreciated of course. Thanks!
