Idle iis suddenly normal 700 1988

I've had this old 740 turbo for about six months. It has 313,000 miles. It had always idled at around 1800 - mechanic told me the throttle body needed to be cleaned, but I didn't want to spend the money - I never thought the car would last this long. Now suddenly this morning the idle fell to around 800. I deliver newspapers in the car and so it idles a lot - worked for over an hour, and it stayed real steady. Really enjoying the quiet! But I keep eyeing the car with suspicion - cars don't magically fix themselves, right? COuld this possibly be a good thing??
