problem replacing odometer gear on a 1987 240 200

I'm not too sure what suggestions I can make, as when I fixed my odometer I was lucky--got in, switched the gear, and reinstalled the instrument cluster without any problems.

I would say that the problem likely lies within your instrument cluster--you probably didn't pull any wires in your car loose while removing it. So, I would suggest taking the cluster back apart using the same technique as before until you get to the part where you put in the gear. Re-assemble the instrument cluster and install it, and see if it works.

I don't know what else you might want to try doing. You've checked the connections, so it's not a forgotten wire. Do the other gauges besides the odometer and speedometer work? I wouldn't think it would be too likely you could break something that affects only those two instruments, so you probably forgot to put something back or put it in wrong.
