drive-belt/air conditioning compressor wear and potential damage? 200

my 1990 240 has developed a nasty sound up front. after checking under the hood i noticed that the while the drive belt and ac compressor belt are turning the belt is slipping on the pulley part of the compressor. closer inspection shows that the drive belt has some fraying.

other than the nasty sound and poor AC, how else will this affect performance and will changing the belts remedy this slippage?

if it's just a belt change i may consider doing it myself. otherwise, i plan on taking it to my indy volvo mechanic.

any thoughts?

thanks
