tach gone wild 1800 1972

Hi folks:
Been reading & learning from the Brickboard contributors for a while, but this is my first
write-in. I've got a tach in my '72 ES that's going nuts on hot days. When the car's been
sitting in the 90+ heat for a few hours, the tach reads high...very high. Sometimes it's
pegged past 7000 rpm. If I've had it parked inside (shade), it operates o.k. Any
thoughts on how to correct the problem....or is the tach on the way out.
Thanx, C-MAN.
