On the M46 manual do you need to clutch when engaging the overdrive(5) gear, always wondered. 200

I have an 86 240 sedan with about 187000 with a manual M46 tranny.

I've always clutched when I engage the 5th gear or disengaged.
Is this the way the tranny is designed or is just pushing the button necessary.
I guess I thought it was easier on the clutch/tranny to clutch when shifting, save the clutch???

What do you think.
