Auto tranny starting to go. Suggestions?

Does the AT kickdown cable move freely, or does it bind up?
You could try an experiment - just disconnect it from the throttle spindle and see if it makes a difference. If the trans still doesn't want to shift with the cable disconnected (when it should shift VERY early), then you probably have some internal transmission problem.

IF you discover that your trans is broken, my advice would be to buy a junkyard unit to replace it. Should be around $200, including a 30-day warranty. Labor around 4-5 hours.
