A/C Service Question 900

The car is a ’93 945T – so it came from the factory with R-134 refrigerant. I have an audible leak in my A/C system. The last time it was charged, it worked well for about a month, but I could actually hear it “hissing” under the hood when the car was shut off with the system up to pressure. I was unable to isolate the breach in the system, so I need to do that before I get it serviced this time.
I don’t have the equipment to evacuate the system properly, so I’m going to have the system recharged by a trusted shop, but I’d like to make sure it’s airtight before I have them do it. FCP Groton put together an o-ring set for me, and I plan to replace all the o-rings in the system while it’s discharged.

Here’s my question: After I’ve replaced all the o-rings, can I simply (safely) dump in a can of R-134 so that the system can build pressure to allow me to test it? Or do I risk damaging the compressor (or anything else) by not adequately evacuating the system beforehand?
