AC UV leak detectors. 200 1990

Well it's getting hot again and my Volvos can't go a whole year without losing the r134a.Has anyone tried any of the UV leak detectors that the local autoparts store carry? You know the one that has a dye, light,"special glasses".etc.I had the 134a in the car last year, cool not cold. Also once I find the leak should I replace the drier, then vaccum the system? I drove by a couple of shops and one said to just add new oil to the compressor and also change the expansion valve, vaccum and add freon. He said there was no need to change all the parts that come in the kit from Volvo. One of my cars a 1990 was changed over by just flushing, vaccum, and adding 134a. The other a 1987 I will use the Volvo kit.Is the kit over kill? Thanks,
Nelson
PS here in NYC shops are running out of 134a!
