Don't know is this will help you, but since no one else is posting I will give it a shot.

I went through the same thing a couple of years ago with a Toyota, so I asked an engineer that has helped designed airbag systems ( my Dad, worked with GM, Saab and Chrysler on their systems), what to do about it. What he told me was that once it has set a code, you will have to take it to the dealer for them to hook up their proprietary scan tool to check the system and then clear the code. If everything is hooked up properly, then there is 99%+ chance that it would fire as designed. But you don't know for sure, unless the central 'brain' is scanned and cleared.

Don't know if the Volvo's are the same. Since my short and small daughter was driving the Toyota at the time, and I did not want to pay the dealer for a scan, I just disconnected the whole mess. She survived, and is probably going to get the 940 this fall anyway.
