e prom 92 240gl 200

Had a diagnostic run on my 92 volvo. It showed nothing. They finally found a volvo release describing the problem to a T and decided it was the e prom chip on the ECU. Said it needed a special tool to change it. Called volvo place and they said, gotta replace the whole computer, $1300. I called bullsht on that because heck, that's more than the car is worth.

Any suggestions?

Also, the car is idling hard now. It's been driven A LOT in the last month. Lot of miles put on it. Could be the transmission. Any ideas on it? It just basically sounds rough.

Thanks in advance.
