Engine won't crank 900 1994

My mother drove home Fri. night from having dinner with me. Sat. a.m. she got in her 960 wagon and it wouldn't turn over. Dash lights up, but no crank. Thought maybe it was a starter problem, so we tried to shift into neutral and roll the car a few few (maybe change position of starter?), but couldn't shift it out of Park. Can't figure why we can't shift it? Any suggestions - she's have to borrow MY car. Not too thrilled about that because it's a '99 V70 AWD where the ABS and Brake lights go on and off intermittently (might scare her.) Thanks!
