fuel pump? 200 1991

i have a 91 240 and the gas guage wasnt working so i took out the sending unit in the gas tank and cleaned it off then put it back in and it worked, but for some reason, now the attached fuel pump apppears to be not working. when the car runs it kind of sputters like its not getting enough gas. when i start it, it will run for a few seconds and then die suddenly, does it sound like i need a new fuel pump or is there some procedure i need to know to prime it or does it sound like the pump has just gone bad?
