Advisability of steam cleaning the engine? 140-160

Many, many years ago I worked at a gas station where we steam cleaned engines by adding kerosene to the water. Not very environmentally friendly, but it did clean the engines very well.
Ditto above re covering distributor. I usually just covered it with a plastic bag and zip-tie or string.
