Strange Goings On with the Fuel Gauge

On the newly acquired 90 745T, the fuel gauge seems to have a mind of it own.

Every once in awhile when initailly starting the car it won't work, then after driving for for awhile it springs to life and appears to work fine for the duration of the drive.

At first I thought float, then realized that would not be it. So I checked the connections in the car and at the tank, all seemed to check out.

My question is, has anyone ever seen this condition before and what was the primary cause?
